Taxi association SANTACO has distanced itself from individuals posing as taxi industry officials who are reportedly stopping private vehicle drivers and demanding money. The organisation has also called on the public to ignore social media claims that taxi operators plan to impound private vehicles. SANTACO spokesperson Mmatshikhidi Phala says such actions have not been authorised by the organisation. Phala says, “We reaffirm that SANTACO is committed to the safe, reliable, and lawful transport of South Africans in roadworthy vehicles. We continue to embrace innovation and modern technology to improve our services and ensure the safety of our commuters and the general public.” Phala further urged the public to avoid sharing unverified claims. “We urge the public to refrain from spreading unverified information that damages the integrity of the industry and sows fear among communities. False narratives not only mislead the public but also undermine ongoing efforts to professionalize and improve the industry,” Phala said. https://x.com/SA_Taxis/status/1922696766043893765?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1922696766043893765%7Ctwgr%5Ecc403d5e2880dca15c27bd5ac923c52dda77af7e%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sabcnews.com%2Fsabcnews%2Fsantaco-denies-involvement-in-alleged-extortion%2F
